Peugeot 5008

December 20th, 2009

The Peugeot 5008 is a rival for the likes of the Renault Grand Scenic, Vauxhall Zafira and of course the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, with which the Peugeot shares a great deal of its underpinnings and interior design thanks to the two French firms being part of the same overall company. You’ll note that all of the key rivals listed for the 5008 have seven seats. This is because UK buyers will only be offered the 5008 as a full seven seater, complete with a pair of third row seats that fold flat into the boot floor, so it still works as a commodious five seater with a large boot.

There’s a range of petrol and turbodiesel engines, as well as the option of Peugeot’s new EGC twin-clutch gearbox that does away with the clutch pedal while retaining manual gearshifts or the option to let the gearbox do the thinking when it comes to gear selection. The 1.6-litre 110bhp turbodiesel with six-speed manual gearbox will be the big seller, but there’s also the choice of a 2.0-litre turbodiesel in 150- and 163bhp forms, which come with six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes respectively. Petrol options are covered by a 120bhp 1.6-litre with five-speed manual or a turbocharged 1.6 boasting 156bhp and a manual six-speeder

Citroen Racing and Red Bul

December 14th, 2009

The collaboration between Citroen and Red Bull, which dates back to the 2008 Rally Argentina (won by Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena) and which has since harvested 15 other wins, is to be reinforced in 2010. As in 2008 and 2009, the two Citroen Total World Rally Team-run C4 WRCs will both sport the livery of the famous energy drink, and the defending World Champions have renewed their faith in Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena and Dani Sordo/Marc Marti.

The deal will be extended in 2010 to include the two Citroen Junior Team cars that will compete in Red Bull’s colours on 12 of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship’s 13 rounds, the exception being the Rally of New Zealand. These two Citroen C4 WRCs will be campaigned by Kimi Räikkönen/Kaj Lindström and Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia.

Finland’s Kimi Räikkönen, 30, who has won 18 Formula 1 Grands Prix, claimed the Formula 1 world crown in 2007, and contested several rallies in 2009 – including his home round of the WRC – said: “I always wanted to compete in rally, especially in the World Rally Championship at some point in my career. Thanks to Red Bull, I have the opportunity to drive the best car of the series with the Citroen C4. This is a new but very exciting challenge. For the moment we have a one-year contract and we will see how it goes for the future. I am really looking forward to testing the car and taking the start of the first rally.”

Citroen Racing Director, Olivier Quesnel added: “Red Bull’s commitment and energy are a perfect fit for Citroen’s ongoing thirst for victory. We will continue to count on Sébastien and Dani to defend our world titles in 2010, and we will also be prolonging our association with Sébastien Ogier who showed outstanding potential this year. Last but not least, it is with immense joy that we welcome Kimi Räikkönen to our ranks. We are very proud that he has chosen Citroen. In addition to the confirmation of these four crews, we will hopefully be able to announce other programmes over the coming weeks.”

Citroen news

A different type of Citroen car spare is likely to be needed in the brand’s new Relay-based bariatric ambulances.

The company now provides two such motors along with a dispatch-based bariatric support vehicle which are specifically for patients who weigh in excess of 50 stone.

AST Ambulance director, Tony Hannigan, explains: “This year and next year AST Ambulance will be investing a total approaching £1 million in bariatric vehicles to meet a growing need in the National Health Service. For this operation the Relay offers significant operational advantages.”

Mr Hannigan highlighted that the bariatrics offer improved inside width and are a lower height for loading. In comparison to the service’s other motors the Relays are coming out at four to five mpg more economical.

This type if ambulance comes in at a cost of £50,000, having reinforced loading ramps, special stretchers and removable seating as a result of being converted by Oughtred & Harrison – part of a wider company which has specialised in freight forwarding and shipping since 1919.

Alfa Romeo Car Parts News

December 11th, 2009

Alfa Romeo car parts production may not have been too badly affected by the recession, if recent figures are anything to go by.

The marque claimed September statistics show it has enjoyed one of the most impressive year-to-date increases of any manufacturer.

It saw a 148.5 per cent growth in new car registrations for the month – with almost 2,000 models straight off the production line delivered to customers in the UK.

For the year so far, volumes are up 40.4 per cent on the same period in 2008.

UK sales director Andrew Sproston said: “This is great news for all concerned.”

He added: “The hard work and investment we have put into the restructure of this iconic brand is now starting to pay off.”

The Alfa MiTo was the company’s most popular model last month.

In August, the manufacturer launched two new Euro 5-compliant engines for its Alfa 159 range.

The marque revealed the units are also due to become options for Alfa Brera and Alfa Spider customers.
